Empowering youth, preventing extremism: Radar Europe’s approach

Youth radicalisation goes often hand in hand with marginalisation because of a lack of meaningful education and job opportunities, a feeling of belonging and safe spaces. It is often fueled by online manipulation and exposure to hate narratives, identity crises and political, religious and ideological polarisation.

Across Europe and its neighbouring regions, we have witnessed a worrying rise in hate speech, xenophobia and extremist propaganda. Migrants, refugees and minority groups are increasingly targeted, and online platforms are being used to spread disinformation and recruit vulnerable individuals — often young people.

At Radar Europe, we believe that youth themselves are the solution for preventing youth radicalisation. We are committed to ensuring that children and youth can grow up in a safe environment. With experience across the EU, Radar Europe brings expertise in youth empowerment and community resilience.  We work to make sure that young people are seen, heard, and supported.

Radar led the European Commission’s Radicalisation Awareness Network (RAN) for over a decade and is a key member of the EU Knowledge Hub on Prevention of Radicalisation. Our cross-sectoral approach to preventing radicalisation begins with empowering young people to lead, question, connect, and create alternatives. It is grounded in human rights, democratic values, and psychosocial support.

We work on:

  • Strengthening critical thinking and digital literacy to counter extremist narratives

  • Promoting peer-led education, formal and non-formal education in safe, inclusive environments

  • Supporting mental health and family resilience as protective factors

  • Facilitating intercultural education and human rights learning

  • Providing positive role models and opportunities for meaningful youth engagement

  • Equipping frontline workers with skills to detect and prevent youth radicalisation
