Irregular Migration and Return: an Approach Bridging Policy and Practice

Irregular migration is a key challenge for the European Union and the international community. Solving irregular migration requires a balance between humanitarian responsibilities, border management and sustainable return policies. Irregular migration pathways in the EU continue to put pressure on asylum systems, reception capacities, and public services. For migrants, the migration journey can be extremely dangerous, frequently exposing them to life-threatening risks and violence by smuggler networks.

Effective return and reintegration policies and practices rooted in dignity, human rights, and cooperation with partner countries are essential to ensuring a sustainable migration framework. The EU prioritises voluntary return and reintegration, capacity-building in origin and transit countries and cooperation with third countries, all while addressing the root causes of irregular migration.

At Radar Europe, we provide strategic expertise to EU institutions, international organisations, national and local authorities and other migration stakeholders. Our approach is built on:

  • Data analysis and research to assess migration trends and inform decision-making.

  • Programme design and evaluation, ensuring social and cultural aspects are considered to achieve more effective and sustainable results.

  • Stakeholder engagement and dialogue.

  • Awareness raising about safe migration opportunities and community engagement with migrants and returnees.

  • Capacity-building and training for migration stakeholders involved in migration management.

By combining research and analysis with on-the-ground insights, Radar Europe’s expert team supports migration policymakers, practitioners, researchers, international organisations and the civil society in designing and implementing evidence-based solutions that enhance protection, improve return and reintegration processes, and foster international cooperation.
